Packahome how-to guides
How to pack framed pictures and mirrors for moving
Measure each piece before choosing a carton. A framed photograph, heavy mirror and original painting have different needs. Start with everyday household frames and arrange specialist advice for pieces outside that ordinary packing scope.
What to have ready.
- Picture boxes sized for each wrapped frame
- Compatible frame corner protectors and suitable cushioning
- Rigid protective boards where appropriate for the frame
- Measuring tape, packing tape, labels and a marker

Review the frame, surface and hanging arrangement.
Write down the destination room and photograph the front and back before packing. Note glass, projecting decoration, loose joints or existing damage. Include the complete frame when measuring height, width and depth; a measurement of the image alone will not tell you whether the protected piece fits a box.
Flag original artwork, fragile finishes, antique frames, unusually large mirrors and pieces with uncertain condition for specialist review. Do not assume a method for an ordinary glazed photograph is suitable for an exposed painting surface. If a mirror is fixed to the building, arrange appropriate removal before treating it as an item ready to pack.
Choose a packing area and the right carton.

Clear a clean work area large enough for the item and its packaging, away from a busy carrying route. Arrange appropriate help before handling an awkward piece. Choose a place for finished cartons that keeps access open.
Choose a sound mirror or picture carton sized for the piece plus its protection. Check the packaging maker's fit and assembly directions, including compatible corner protectors or inserts. A carton that fits the bare frame may be too small once the protection is added. Oversized or unusual shapes need a reviewed packaging plan rather than an improvised collection of scraps.
Identify hardware and protect the frame.
Check for hanging hooks, wires or other fittings that could catch on packaging or nearby pieces. Remove only fittings designed to be removed, and put them in a labeled container identifying the frame. Do not dismantle the frame or remove the glass simply to make the item easier to fit.
Use appropriate corner and surface protection according to the item and packaging instructions. Keep tape on the packaging rather than the picture, mirror surface or decorative finish. Avoid pressing packing material into projecting trim. Do not assume a general household wrap is suitable for direct contact with artwork; have sensitive surfaces reviewed before choosing the material.
Fit the piece without pressure or loose gaps.
Assemble the carton and fitted protection as directed, then place the piece into that arrangement. Follow the relevant kit instructions rather than mixing components that were not designed to fit together. Support the protected frame and fill remaining gaps with suitable cushioning so it cannot move freely inside the closed carton.
Check that the carton closes normally without forcing its panels against the glass or decorative parts. Keep other household objects out of the box. If two small pieces are to share packaging, review how each will be separately protected and supported first; do not assume a stack of unprotected frames becomes suitable once the carton is taped shut.
Label it for the people handling the next stage.
Write the destination room, item description and fragile marking clearly on the carton. For a group, add identifying numbers that match your list. Mark the required upright orientation in accordance with the packaging directions so someone seeing the side of a staged carton can still understand how it should be handled.
U-Haul's picture-packing guidance calls for carrying and storing its mirror cartons upright and avoiding loads on top. Discuss protected placement and restraint with whoever is responsible for loading your vehicle. Do not leave a tall carton unsecured while waiting for departure, and do not treat a fragile label as a substitute for suitable packaging.
Unpack in a clear area and check before hanging.
Bring each carton to its destination before opening it where practical. Find the labeled hardware and remove packaging carefully. Check the frame, glass and fittings before hanging the piece. Keep the work area and household traffic route clear.
For packing help, provide photographs, complete dimensions, the number of pieces and details of unusual materials or value. Ask which pieces and materials the quote includes. Wall removal, specialist crating, transport and installation need explicit arrangements when required.
Common packing questions
Can several framed pictures share a moving box?
Only use an arrangement that separately protects and supports each piece within suitable packaging. Do not put unprotected frames together simply because the carton has spare room.
Is this method suitable for an original painting?
An exposed painting surface, fragile finish or valuable artwork needs an appropriate specialist review. Ordinary household packing instructions do not establish which materials can safely touch that surface.
Should I remove pictures from their frames?
Routine packing does not require dismantling a sound frame. If the frame or glazing is loose or unsuitable for travel, get advice before removing components.

Common packing mistakes to avoid.
- Buying a box before measuring the protected frame.
- Putting adhesive or tight wrapping directly on a delicate surface.
- Stacking other belongings against the front of a picture box.
