Packing a home

How to pack lamps and lampshades for moving

A lamp is several different packing tasks: the base, shade, bulb and small fittings. Separate those parts where the design allows, protect each appropriately and keep the parts identifiable.

Unplug the lamp and allow the bulb to cool before handling it. Check the design and any manufacturer instructions. A removable shade on a table lamp is different from a fragile antique, a large floor lamp or a fixture attached to the building.

Photograph the assembled lamp and its removable fittings so the arrangement is easy to follow later. Hardwired fixtures, unusual disassembly and valuable or delicate pieces need an appropriate specialist plan; do not turn a standard packing task into electrical work.

Where designed to be removed, take off the shade and bulb carefully. Keep small fittings in a labeled container or bag connected to the lamp’s packing group. Identify which shade belongs to which base if several lamps are being packed at once.

Package bulbs separately with suitable protection and a clear label. Keep them out of loose fabric and ordinary drawers where someone may reach in without seeing them. Follow manufacturer and local handling guidance for damaged bulbs rather than putting them in a moving box.

Protect the base according to its material: a ceramic or glass base needs a different review from a plain metal one. Coil the cord loosely and keep the plug from rubbing the finish. Do not lift a lamp by its cord or wrap the cord tightly around a fragile part.

Choose a sturdy box that accommodates the protected base with cushioning and support. Keep it from shifting freely, but do not create pressure on a delicate neck, switch or fitting. A large or unusually shaped lamp may require purpose-made packaging or specialist help.

Use a clean box that allows suitable support around the shade. Keep heavy objects out of that box. Protect the shade’s surface with material appropriate to the fabric or finish, and avoid loose printed paper directly against a surface it could mark.

Do not force multiple shades together simply because they appear to nest. Shapes, trims and frames can catch or press against one another. Review each shade’s condition and support it so the carton closes without pushing down on it.

Label the destination room and distinguish the base box from the shade box. Add the same identifying name to the fittings and bulb container. Let the loading team know which cartons contain shades and other crush-sensitive contents.

At the new home, unpack in a clear area, check the parts and follow the lamp’s instructions for reassembly. Do not use an item with damaged wiring or uncertain electrical condition. If lamps are among the awkward things left in your house, describe them specifically when requesting packing help.

Can the lampshade travel on the lamp?

Separating removable shades from bases usually makes the parts easier to protect. Check the lamp’s design and instructions rather than forcing a fitting or assuming the whole lamp can be boxed as one piece.

Can packing help include a hardwired light fixture?

Hardwired fixtures and electrical work require separate appropriate arrangements. Describe unusual lamps and fixtures before the quote so the accepted packing scope is clear.
